In 1968 Warhol was shot by a hanger-on at his studio (called the Factory). Valerie Solanas, a “radical feminist”, had appeared in one of Warhol’s movies. She claimed to have formed the organization S.C.U.M, the “Society of Cutting Up Men.” On June 3, she arrived at his studio with a gun in a paper bag. She shot Warhol in his right side as well as the curator Mario Amaya.
Warhol was pronounced clinically dead when he arrived at the hospital but they were able to revive him. Solanas was sentenced to only three years in prison. [i]
